Blane Charles and Michael Aram

BCDC (Blane Charles Design Consulting) prides itself on being an ultimate conduit to the finest that NYC has to offer when enhancing our clients’ internal and external Spaces, so it was no coincidence that he was invited to interview Michael Aram for his 25th Anniversary.

BCDC celebrates Michael’s selection of essential natural elements. This includes his genius creative strokes of organic metals and rich marbles that comprise these masterpiece creations. Once integrated into your physical space, they are transformed into heirloom canvases on our person, personal environment and infused into the landscape of our lives.

Each magnificent piece Michael designs emanates from a place of social consciousness, passion, and celebration of our profound surroundings. Reflecting on the evolution of artisanship, Michael recalls that, “with metal, it’s always been astonishing that we can take a sheet of stainless steel, for example, and transform it into a functional object, such as a bowl, all by utilizing craft techniques that are otherwise ancient and the opposite of how many objects are made today.”

Fab Five Favs” choose the following five collections in this article to commemorate Aram’s  achievements in the past 25 years.

RAINFOREST
The Rainforest Collection is inspired by the fragility of the world’s natural resources and the mysterious beauty of the flora and fauna found in the depths of our tropical jungles. On a recent trip to Brazil, Michael encountered Landscape Architect and Brazilian Modernist, Roberto Burle Marx. In this collection he celebrates Marx’s sensitive integration of clean geometric forms and structures co-existing within the savage allure and sublime seduction of the Amazon Rainforest.

BITTERSWEET
The Bittersweet Collection is inspired by the twining, perennial vine, native to North America. Unlike any of his previous collections, Bittersweet opens new doors to the orient along with a delicate juxtaposition of delicate and fragile vines with strong and robust forms which for Michael “…symbolizes truth ad honesty. I love the strength and versatility of the Bittersweet vine.”

GOOSEBERRY
The Gooseberry Collection reflects the intricacies of form and texture found in foliage from around the world. Michael’s interpretation of these plant forms magnifies what he refers to as “shapes that conjure a sense of freshness and fragility. At the same time the textures represent a metaphor for life itself … growth, vitality, pulsation. I love the contrast of the top and bottom surfaces. They speak of duality in all its incarnations: yin and yang, Ganga and Yamuna, dark and light. I believe everybody has an emotional response when they see natural objects.”

NEW LEAVES
The Michael Aram New Leaves Collection is a celebration of the beauty and meaning found in individual leaves. Inspired by specific types of foliage that have taken on sentimental meaning in Michael’s life, this collection embodies his genuine passion for nature in its purest and most personal form.

PALM JEWELRY
The Palm Jewelry Collection really showcases Michael’s ability to not only adorn the home with beauty, but to be able to scale down to delicately adorn the body. He refers to the Palm Jewelry Collection as “…a gift of nature’s beauty.”
