01 Jul Design Uncensored with Cecil Adams

Ready for another inspiring discussion on trend & design with Stacy’s weekly live series Design Uncensored? On the seventh episode, Stacy hosts an intriguing conversation with Cecil Adams, VP and Creative Director for Currey & Company. With over 20 years in the home furnishings industry, Cecil gives insight to product & design trends amongst all categories including textiles, lighting, upholstery, and case goods.

See 3 key takeaways form the conversation below!

1. A Healthy Home

People are wanting to elevate their space not only to make updates, but to make themselves feel better while in their homes. However they’re not looking to add more “stuff” but rather do the opposite in picking larger statement pieces surrounded by a cleaner, more minimal environment. Cecil mentions how lighting is a category which can play a big role in this concept by both creating ambience and serving as a sculptural statement piece. Plants are another thing that help bring soul to the space as it’s a living element that has to be cared for. Cecil also recommends bringing in decor items relating back to your childhood to evoke a sense of nostalgia and comfort.

2. Back to Earth

Wicker and rattan are not going anywhere! Contrary to what many people think, these materials are not only related to the beach or coastal environments. In fact, according to Cecil, they have transcended far past that becoming a universal material to use. Rather than being inspired by a place, they are a revisit to the 70’s when people craved a closer connection to nature leading to the rediscovery of organic materials such as these. Coming out of the 50’s and 60’s when everything was plastered and vibrant, this natural look brought people back to earth, allowing them to to  feel grounded and more at ease. Today, these materials are heavily used in product design and are currently best sellers at Currey & Company!

3. Resurgence of the 1920’s

We’re seeing Art Deco of the 1920’s come back into play in all different types of interiors where the furniture and decor in these spaces have more curves rather than being all angular. Aside from the shape of the products, the biggest element that relates back to the “roaring 20’s” is the unique color palette that we’re seeing everywhere right now. Soft blushes, light pinks, and warm beige reminiscent of flesh tone cosmetic colors combined with pearlescent finishes like the pearls women wore during the time are key to this look. A time that had a huge focus on the progression of women, we are seeing this moment happen again which is why Cecil believes this style is coming back around.
