01 May Tips & Tools: Remotely Managing Your Team

Last week Stacy was on virtual panel presented by comm collective, Tips & Tools: Remotely Managing Your Team. She spoke alongside expert designers Chad James and Elizabeth Lawrence of Bunny Williams Interior Design in a discussion led by Miranda Agee, Director of Business Development at SMI Construction and Design Journalist. The talk was based around one question I think a lot of us are wondering right now: “How do you keep your design team connected, inspired, and on track while everyone is working remotely?

Watch the Discussion Below!

See our 5 key tips we took away from the panel:

1. Use Innovative Ways to Stay Connected

Utilizing things like project trackers, to do lists and daily worksheets through shared Google Documents is a great way for keeping your team members up to date on your latest project. As many of us know, Zoom is another excellent platform to use for virtual meetings and calls to keep the work day productive.

2. Don’t be a micromanager!

Having trust in your team members while working remotely is extremely important. Make sure yourself and each team member is clear of their responsibilities and feel free to check in on them throughout the day without being overbearing.

3. Be Creative

Look at ways working from home can be an advantage for you and your team. Use some of the time you may not typically get in the office to delve deeper into certain projects. Become more creative with your ideas and don’t be afraid to break the boundaries a bit. This is a time of ultimate reflection and we should encourage our team to let that show through their work.

4. Over-Communicate

Schedule brief “team huddles” via Zoom each morning to discuss the team’s daily priorities and tasks. For brief communication that doesn’t require more than 2 people, all team members should have their cell phones handy at all times throughout the work day. Be sure your team members have each others’ contact numbers available and ready.

5. Offer Support

In the end, this is about the people. Reach out to your team members on a personable level to check in on them. Ask how they are dealing with the circumstances and explain how you are handling it yourself. Schedule one-on-one time with them whether it’s for a work related project or just a brief chat.
